ABSTRACT

There are a variety of technologies for generating modern energy carriers electricity, gas, and liquid fuels-from biomass, which can be used at the household, community, or industrial scale. The different technologies tend to be classed in terms of either the conversion process they use or the end product produced. Gasification is a technology that has great potential in terms of efficiency of conversion of biomass into electricity. Based on the successful operation of the Gussing plant, the fast internally circulating fluidized bed (FICFB) gasifier has been commercialized in six plants in Europe in stages of planning, construction, or operation. This chapter presents a list of biomass gasification plants investigated experimentally by ENEA Research Centre Trisaia. In the framework of its research activities focused on thermo-chemical conversion of waste biomass for both thermal and electric power, ENEA has developed an industrial scale FICFB gasifier at Trisaia.
