ABSTRACT

This chapter analyzes the reforms in the power sector to lead to energy security and sustainability with assessment of challenges to achieve policy objectives. It provides actual remarks on policy reforms and suggestive measures to ensure energy sufficiency and sustainability. The power sector reform follows a series of efforts to enhance the energy capacity, optimum use of resources, energy efficiency, and sustainability. Private participation in the energy market has changed the conventional energy sector of India and plays a significant role in power generation. It reduces the superiority of state electricity boards and provides more suitable power supply by centralizing the end user. Financial budgetary allocation to promote clean energy technologies and lack of public interest toward renewable purchase have marginalized the alternative energy sector. Clean development mechanism (CDM) is a large source for mitigation finance to developing countries, which is the key motivation to develop clean energy technologies in the country. CDM projects require public consultation before their implementation.
