ABSTRACT

Geopolitics focuses on political power in relation to geographic space. In particular, territorial waters and land territory in correlation with diplomatic history. Economic globalization has not only been accelerating the process of the integration of the world economy but it also encourages competition among/between countries, especially among big powers to optimize the value of investment. Comprehensive national power (CNP) may be simply defined as the comprehensive capabilities of a country to pursue its strategic objectives by taking actions internationally and its capacity to exploit its strategic resources, strategic capabilities, and strategic outcomes. Strategic resources are central in the CNP of a nation. This chapter discusses the categories of the national strategic resources. It also discusses the role of natural resources; particularly energy in building the CNP of a nation and how geopolitics can leverage availability/denial of energy. The chapter illustrates the energy dependency of selected countries/group of countries.
