ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT “Democracy is the government of the people, by the people and for the people.” The evolution of governance models should pertinently adhere to this and investigate the underlying potential, opportunities, power, and capabilities of novel, emerging Internet technologies. The emergence of the social web and the exponential data generated consequently can be analyzed to give the human touch to governance. In this chapter we discuss the paradigm shifts from e-governance to s-governance characterizing a social model of governance that is envisioned to be democratic, transparent, and accountable. As a step toward intelligent governance, we expound a new perspective of “sentiment” in s-governance to understand the human element of Big Data. The impact of Big Data on governance facilitated by application of sentiment mining is exemplified by demonstrating its use in research and practice.
