ABSTRACT

Merck & Co., Inc. (Kenilworth, NJ, USA; henceforth Merck) is a company that is devoted to discovering, developing, and providing innovative products and services that save and improve lives around the world. This chapter shows how an integrated framework was created to harness these four Merck knowledge management (KM) capabilities in the act of new product development. In the late 2007, it was clear for Merck leaders that the previous practices used to manage knowledge in the new product development, and scale-up process were no longer ideally suited for the new challenges ahead. The role of Merck's Global Pharmaceutical Commercialization group and the overall commercialization process is to develop, commercialize, file, and sustainably launch new products, taking them from achievement of proof of concept in Merck Research Laboratories to the hands of Merck Manufacturing Division's internal and external sites and supply chains.
