ABSTRACT

The Solanaceae, or nightshade family, is composed of more than 3000 species and encompasses a number of economically important food crops, ornamental plants, and medicinal herbs (Mueller et al. 2005). Potato (S. tuberosum L.) is probably the most economically important solanaceous crop, with 368 million tons harvested on 19.5 million hectares of land (FAOSTAT 2014). Tomato (S. lycopersicum L.) is the most widely grown horticultural crop with annual worldwide production of more than 160 million tons in 2012 (FAOSTAT 2014), and an economic value of US$ 1.9 billion in the United States alone (USDA 2013). Although potato and tomato originate from different ecosystems and differ in respect to their sensitivity to climate stress, climate change is expected to impact the cultivation of both of these important crops.
