ABSTRACT

Honey has been a part of human nutrition since ancient times, as a sweetener and a home remedy. Honey is a food product that honey bees produce from flower nectar, secretions of living parts of plants, and excretions of plant-sucking insects that feed on the living parts of different plants. Due to the long tradition of beekeeping in Slovenia, mainly Slovenian honey is consumed in Slovenia, with imported honey having only a 14% share. The most famous Slovenian beekeepers who were responsible for the progress of Slovenian beekeeping in the past were Peter Pavel Glavar and Anton Jansa. Monofloral honey types where a certain botanical source prevails are produced in Slovenia, and Slovenian consumers are accustomed to having a wide honey choice. The requirements for honey quality on the Slovenian market are set by the Rules relating to honey, which are also in line with the European Council Directive relating to honey.
