ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT In recent years, plant melatonin (MEL) has been the focus of much interest. It appears that the direct and indirect effects of MEL are multidirectional; it is pleiotropic in character. As an amphiphilic, wide-spectral, and extremely effective antioxidant, phytomelatonin must have an impact on plant stress physiology. This chapter describes the role of MEL in the response of plants to stress, as well as its ability to increase their tolerance to changing environmental conditions. MEL has been hailed as a new plant biostimulator and its uses in horticulture and agriculture have proved to be extremely benecial and desirable.
