ABSTRACT

Rapid urbanization, population growth, and changes in lifestyles in developing countries have contributed to increased per capita municipal waste generation (Agdag 2008). In order to manage the vast quantities of MSW, the following are common practices used in different developing countries:

1. Collection of waste: MSW is collected either by mechanical or manual methods in developing countries Jafari et al. 2010. Collection of the waste is quite complex, as MSW is not only the waste coming from households but also from unspecified places. The waste is stored in bins provided. Waste is collected door to door or by using motorized vehicles that come at particular times. Municipalities are fully responsible for the collection of waste. They have to collect the waste either through their own infrastructures or through private sector contracts.
