ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT In modern military operations, it is critical that commanders be sensitive to the social and cultural norms of populations with whom they must interact. Most military operations have the mission of promoting stability and reconstruction or eventually evolve to such after a major combat as in Iraq. Gaining the cooperation and the active assistance of the local population is critical to ensuring a secure environment. This chapter identies the sociocultural capabilities needed to execute missions and tasks across the full spectrum of military operations, identies which of these the military has access to, and proposes mitigating measures to close requirement gaps.
