ABSTRACT

Psychologists have played a role in the selection of law enforcement recruits since the early 1900s. One of the first uses of psychology in police selection occurred in 1917 with the use of the Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale in the pre-employment screening of potential candidates (Terman et  al., 1917). Since that time, the use of psychological principles and police psychologists has steadily increased. Psychologists have addressed issues in the field of law enforcement and the health of law enforcement professionals from many directions.
