ABSTRACT
Nevertheless, it is still a major challenge to translate preoperative plans into the operating room. Today the imaging data mentioned earlier are commonly available in the operating theatre through the picture archiving and communication system – a system that is now a standard worldwide (Figure 4.1). However, during the intervention itself, these data can lose their validity to a large extent, due to changes in anatomy that start with dierent patient positioning, and extend up to changes due to resection and mobilisation of organs (e.g. in the abdomen [Baumhauer et al. 2008], in the brain [Hastreiter et al. 2004, Shamir et al. 2009] and in the liver [Maier-Hein et al. 2008]).
