ABSTRACT

Hydrogen economy has been at our doorsteps for a few decades now. However, the three arms of this economy, namely, production of hydrogen, storage, and distribution, have not reached any matured and possible commercial stage. Hydrogen production and storage are still in the domain of scientific research and development. Among the various options available (briefly outlined in Table 3.1) for the production of hydrogen, photoelectrochemical (PEC) or photocatalytic production of hydrogen by the decomposition of water is considered as one of the viable routes. This is a self-imposed restriction, and possibly some unique advantages can be claimed such as the possible equidistribution of energy source among the various nations since the source of energy in this case, the solar radiation that is supposed to be common among all nations though the extent of solar radiation available to each of these nations, may differ.
