ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the significance of nanobiotechnology and discusses various applications of nanobiotechnology, including nanomedicine. It provides nanoparticles and nanomaterials and explains the application of nanobiotechnology in food testing and water pollution. Nanobiotechnology is the convergence of engineering and molecular biology, which is leading to a new class of multifunctional devices and systems for biological and chemical analysis with better sensitivity and specificity and a higher rate of recognition. Nanobiotechnology is that branch of nanotechnology that deals with the study and application of biological and biochemical activities from elements of nature to fabricate new devices like biosensors. Nanobiotechnology—an integration of physical sciences, molecular engineering, biology, chemistry, and biotechnology—holds considerable promise of advances in pharmaceuticals and healthcare. Nanomedicine is within the realm of reality, starting with nanodiagnostics and drug delivery facilitated by nanobiotechnology. One of the earliest nanomedicine applications was the use of nanocrystalline silver, which is an antimicrobial agent for the treatment of wounds.
