ABSTRACT
The four roles identified in Fig. 1 represent the main actors in a tolling system: the user of the road, the toll charger, which is the entity entitled to apply a toll, the toll service provider, which interfaces the user by means of a contract and provides him with the technical means for electronic tolling and the manager of the tolling environment, which is typically (even if not always) a road authority.
