ABSTRACT

A Water Use Master Plan (WUMP) is a holistic approach for integrated water resources management. e application of a geographical information system (GIS) in WUMP oers a spatial representation of the water resources in various social, economic, hydrological and geographic settings to better integrate recharge, retention and reuse (3R) principles into the WUMP process. is integrated analysis from GIS can be used in calculating the current and future hardships considering the possible impacts of climate change in the catchment area. is helps in identifying the potential opportunities for critical watersheds and hardship zones and to implement watershed

conservation activities for balancing ecosystem services such as water and land use from anearly stage in the planning process. is will further help for designing sustainable water resources projects in future considering the climate resilience against drying of hill springs simultaneously. GIS is a very crucial supporting tool in decision making processes, especially when sustainability of water supply systems and services are the major concerns, either from the investment or environment conservation perspective. HELVETAS’ Water Resource Management Program (WARM-P) has prepared more than 100 WUMPs since 2001 in Nepal. A GIS supported WUMP focused on 3R is the further innovation of WARM-P for an integrated water resources management approach in Nepal. is paper presents the pilot implementation of GIS supported, 3R focused WUMP in Padukasthan village development committee (VDC) of Dailekh district in 2013.
