ABSTRACT

The world of coatings technology has come to rely extensively on polymeric materials today most academic universities or industrial firms dealing in coatings are invariably associated with a polymer division. Historically, the term coatings would have been reminiscent of the artist’s paint, which originally used natural ingredients such as linseed oil or egg yolk extracts. Iskowitz (2006) provides an overview of the various stages of development of composition of the artist’s paint. However, the gloss, durability, rheological specifications, and numerous other considerations have made polymers an essential ingredient in paints. Most of the binders used in paints happen to be polymeric, considering their good adhesion, drying, and chemical functionalities. Even in today’s world of coatings which has broadened to applications ranging from art paints to photographic films to adhesives to metal corrosion prevention to printing inks to machine or wood finish, the use of polymers is inevitable. The final coated material happens to be polymeric either before the coating application or at the least, after the coating is cured.
