ABSTRACT

This chapter surveys the nonsurgical rehabilitative services available to provide effective treatment of brain-injured patients with visual sequelae. It should be a useful reference for those who deal with these patients in intensive rehabilitative environments as well as for primary care professionals when a rehabilitative hospital or center is not accessible. It may also be useful to both novice and experienced vision care providers working in the area of traumatic brain injury (TBI) rehabilitation. Two types of eye doctors are frequently required in management of the visual consequences of TBI: the ophthalmologist and the optometrist. Padula and Argyris have identified a constellation of visual deficits, which they have termed post-trauma vision syndrome (PTVS). The amazing flexibility in modification of the vestibulo-ocular reflex as well as the visual perceptual apparatus has been demonstrated in normal adults by application of inverting prisms. Vision therapy has also been applied successfully to remediation of vision disorders secondary to brain injury.
