ABSTRACT
Organic farming originated in Europe and America in the early 20th century and has become an important alternative form of agriculture. The strongest and most active organic farming research has been conducted in Europe. Organic farming research in China has suffered from a lack of financial support since its late birth. The experiment was conducted in three side-by-side greenhouses consisting of three different systems: organic farming, low-input farming, and conventional farming. The content of vitamin C in the organic farming system was 11.9% higher in 2003 than that in the conventional system, and in 2004 the levels in the organic farming and low-input farming systems were significantly higher than those in the conventional systems. Differences in total nitrogen output among the different farming systems, possibly caused by varied nitrogen content as the yield of eggplant varied between different farming systems, was comparable, with less than 4% difference.
