ABSTRACT
This chapter introduces the background and developmental stages of organic agriculture, the status quo of organic production and marketing, developmental policies, strategies, and measures for the continued development of organic farming in China. Constructing an organic production base for demonstration is the most important measure needed to promote organic agriculture in China. Organization and participation in organic product expositions by central ministries are important to the support of organic industry development. Local governments give special funds to enterprises, organizations, and farmers both directly as organic production inputs and as certification fee subsidies. Local government has taken the lead with special funding for regional organic agricultural planning, training, consulting, and technology promotion and for establishing organic production bases with high standards. Construction of organic agriculture is a process of engaging contemporary society with nature in a harmonious way, with the participation of the whole society and to the benefit of future generations.
