ABSTRACT
There are over 2300 serotypes of Salmonella that have been conrmed as causative agents of salmonellosis. The two main symptoms of salmonellosis are typhoid or typhoid-like fever and gastroenteritis. It has been demonstrated that the infectious dose of Salmonella ssp. is 101-102 cells (Darwin and Miller, 1999). Theobald Smith discovered the rst strain of Salmonella-Salmonella choleraesuis in 1885. Salmonella species are Gram-negative, facultative anaerobic, rod-shaped, non-sporeforming, motile bacteria that belong to the family of Enterobacteriaceae.
