ABSTRACT

Alongside the European CoORdination of Information on the Environment (CORINE) Land Cover (CLC) data generation, activities for more detailed levels of land cover (LC) production take place in various European member states. All of these national LC data generation approaches vary in methodology, geometry, and thematic detail. The approaches range from land cover/land use (LU/LC) information derived directly from satellite data to LU/LC information derived largely from existing national data. The methodologies applied cover the range from computer-assisted photointerpretation (CAPI) to (semi-)automated generation (SAG) of LU/LC data out of a combination of data

sources. The geometric detail/minimum mapping unit (MMU) varies from less than 1 ha to the 25 ha of CLC and the semantics are often more detailed for specific categories given the objective for which the national dataset is produced or the landscape specificities of the member states.
