ABSTRACT

Modern intraocular lenses (IOL) and modern IOL power calculation allow a significantly improved postoperative uncorrected distance visual acuity by correcting for axial eye length, corneal astigmatism, and to some extent higher-order aberrations. Sarfarazi is an elliptical dual-optic accommodating IOL. The 1CU single-piece accommodative IOL is the most excessively researched accommodating IOL. The NuLens accommodating IOL’s design features polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) haptics with fine end plates that are secured to ciliary sulcus without sutures, an anterior PMMA plane, a small chamber filled with flexible silicone gel, and a posterior piston operated by the empty capsular bag that applies pressure on the gel. The developers annotated that a version of the NuLens suitable for small incision cataract surgery should be introduced with regard to the observed steep decline in endothelial cell count observed in the first human study as well as to reduce surgically induced astigmatism.
