ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT There are a wide range of influences on the potential of a given area to slips, trips, and falls involving the suitable design, inspection, maintenance, and management of walkway surfaces and their components. There are well established criteria for most dimensional design aspects, including sidewalks, curbing, curb cutouts, stairs, handrails, ramps, and parking-area elements including tire stops, speed bumps, and drainage. Likewise, there are tried and true best practices for controls such as lighting, signage, floor mats, and snow/ice removal. This chapter provides a concise discussion of each of these controls and their role in the cause and prevention of slips, trips, and falls.
