ABSTRACT

For geriatric individuals with physical, sensory, communication, or cognitive disabilities, assistive technology devices (ATD) can facilitate independence in accomplishing activities. An ATD is what the person uses. How they obtain and maintain it falls under the purview of assistive technology services. In the United States, an assistive technology device was originally defined in the Technology Related Assistance for Individuals with Disabilities Act of 1988. The Assistive Technology Device Predisposition Assessment (ATD PA) emerged from research on the use and nonuse of recommended ATDs by consumers with a variety of disabilities. The ATD PA Person Form has 54 items, which have been mapped to the World Health Organization’s International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health domains of Body Functions and Activities and Participation. The perspectives and expectations of others in the environments of use can be influential.
