ABSTRACT

Public health improvements have led to significant increases in human longevity, and gains in medical science have also contributed, albeit more modestly. Many adults enjoy good health well into their later years, but eventually, most will experience one or more chronic illnesses that will impact the remainder of their lives. Hospice is a wonderful resource for patients who have decided to forego disease-directed therapies for a terminal illness and to focus solely on comfort and quality of life. Basic palliative care can and should be a part of the treatment plan of any patient diagnosed with a serious illness from the time of diagnosis. Initially, the treatment plan is likely to focus primarily on disease management, and, if possible, cure; but symptom management and discussion of a patient’s and family’s hopes, fears, and concerns are also imperative throughout the course of a patient’s illness.
