ABSTRACT

Caring for geriatric patients is a skill and a challenge at the same time. Post-acute care is becoming more of a bigger challenge as a result of its economic impact. Throughout the world, healthcare costs for caring the growing number of older adults are reaching astronomical levels. The global prevalence of the leading chronic diseases is on the rise with most of it occurring in the developing countries. Cardiovascular disease is reported as the leading cause of death in these countries and is expected to increase to 120% in females and 137% in males by 2020. In Switzerland, they found that multimorbidity was associated with higher cost of care and higher healthcare utilization in the older population. Health care should be provided in an integrated care model that focuses on the ability of the older adults than their disability.
