ABSTRACT
The Chapter. Many of those reading this chapter are soon to be parents of novice teen drivers or will someday be parents of novice teen drivers. You know only too well how frightening it can be to think about handing over the keys to your children, let alone actually watch them drive away for that first time on their own. And you may be encountering material about novice teen driving for the first time. This chapter is written especially for you so that you do not need to wade through the entire Handbook of Teen and Novice Drivers to learn the nuggets that are buried within. Here, we outline the top 10 things that we believe parents should know when their teens start to drive. For each point, we briefly elaborate on the scientific evidence supporting our suggestions. For a more thorough treatment of each topic, we refer readers to other chapters in the Handbook. A number of additional resources for parents on teen driving are listed at the end of the chapter.
