ABSTRACT

The Chapter. Key advances have been made in recent years in the material that is taught in training programs to novice teen drivers, the method that is used to impart the training, and the medium that is used to deliver the training. Material. Unlike more general driver education programs with many objectives, training programs now exist that are focused specically on reducing crashes by changing those behaviors known to be related to increases in risk. Methods. e new pedagogical techniques used to impart the training have in common the fact that they capture teen drivers making errors in judgment or vehicle control in both real and virtual environments, and then provide feedback to them (and sometimes parents) in real time or at some appropriate later time. Media. e new skills training programs have used platforms that are much more immersive, including in-vehicle recording systems on the open road as well as driving simulators, PCs, and nomadic devices. Training programs are also taking advantage of technological innovation in delivering interactive e-learning materials, oen as part of a blended learning experience. Among those new programs that have been evaluated, many have proven eective at changing behaviors on driving simulators and in the eld, some for periods of up to a year aer little more than an hour of training. Limitations. () While most of the training programs have improved performance, performance is rarely at or near ceiling. () Only a handful of the studies, all with clear limitations,

have examined directly the relationship between training and crashes and/or citations, making it dicult to determine just how big of an impact these new training programs will ultimately have on reducing new drivers’ crash risks. () Very few studies have been carried out on a representative population of novice drivers, making it dicult to determine whether the great majority of training programs would work for the broad range of novice drivers in any one jurisdiction.
