ABSTRACT

The Chapter. The measurement of eye movements while driving has an almost 50-year history. Gains in fundamental knowledge about driving, specifically regarding teen and novice drivers, are briefly reviewed. Basic tenets of eye movements as well as common measures are described as well as eye-tracking systems that have been applied in many research settings. We also present several issues and challenges that are inherent in the study of eye movements in an attempt to offer newcomers to eye tracking some added insight. Limitations and Recommendations. (1) We do not exhaustively review the existing literature on eye movements and driving. Some of this material is covered elsewhere (Chapters 6, 7, and 12). (2) Space constraints preclude an in-depth coverage of some of the inherent issues. We hope that a brief introduction to some of these issues will spur interested readers into digging deeper.
