ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the basic principles and operation mechanisms of single-molecule electronic and optoelectronic devices. Both the general background and the current research status have been discussed, followed by overview of the future scientific study and application development. Various types of single-molecule devices, ranging from diodes to transistors and from switches to sensors, have been described and reviewed. Studies of singlemolecule systems not only lead to design and fabrication of devices but also more importantly provide the ultimate level of understanding of the molecular electronic properties and the dependence on external perturbing (e.g., applied field). Such understanding helps broaden the concept and perspective of molecular electronics and optoelectronics.
