ABSTRACT

The landslide mapping is very important for land use planning, engineering works design, civil protection and risk reduction programs. With this aim the paper presents the results of a geological, geomorphological and geotechnical survey of the Enna area in the south of Italy, and the use of the Geographic Information System (GIS) and Open Source (OS) Platform for making available and distributing the landslide data over the web. Starting from the study of the geological framework and historical background for landslides of the Enna district, the research has focused on the causes triggering the landslides. Key factors (lithology, slope gradient, slope aspect, elevation, soil property, vegetation coverage, flow, fracture, etc.) are selected to assess the maps of landslide susceptibility that shown the frequencies and distributions of landslides. The resulting landslide hazard maps illustrates the hot spots of the high landslide potential areas.
