ABSTRACT

In an increasingly developing world, in which sustainability has become not only an option but rather a demand, building adaptation or retrofitting has become an activity that continues to make a significant contribution to the workload of the construction industry. Moreover, besides over-cladding of existing buildings, the over-roofing occupies a significant part in this modernization scheme. In this context, the paper presents an integrated refurbishing solution, which combines the idea of implementing highly industrialized over-roofing systems using cold-formed steel profiles with an integrated over-cladding system for complete renovation, also improving the time-cost balance. Three types of envelope solutions for wall cladding are analysed and compared in function of the thermo-insulation material: (1) polystyrene; (2) basaltic rock wool and (3) mineral wool, respectively. The paper tackles with the structural system for the over-roofing system, creating the integrated over-cladding options and finally assesses the social, environmental and cost impact of the solutions considered.
