ABSTRACT

Fib Model Code 2010 has for the first time incorporated life-cycle perspective and philosophical concepts such as through-life management into the design of concrete structures and promoted an approach based on performance requirements that consider durability, safety, serviceability and suistainability, but it is the matter of present and future researches to comprehensively define the steps and procedures for the assessment of the existing structures. Research in the field of life-cycle performance of structural systems must therefore be continued, delivering enhanced guidelines to the structural codes and standards. In the currently ongoing research, the task for authors is to deliver a “LeCIE” tool – a tool for the assessment, evaluation, decision/making of reinforced concrete railway bridges and, when required, implementation of interventions. The first step in the research had been to develop the procedures, steps and the framework. The target of this contribution is to give an insight in the proposed framework and explain the philosophy behind it.
