ABSTRACT

Civil engineering is, traditionally, focused on construction. Due to the long lifetime of structures and the fact that new construction becomes scarcer, society is challenged to keep the existing infrastructure in good condition and performance. Civil engineers are required to maintain infrastructure in a cost effective and efficient way, whilst ensuring that the asset manager is fully in control. To be in control, knowledge is required on object condition, performance and related risks.

It is our experience that in risk analysis a structured approach is important. This includes the mind-set of the analyst. The analyst has to understand the risks related to a specific object and its function in the network. It includes a full evaluation of former and current condition reports and information on the existing structural design (non-damage related object risks). The inherent knowledge of the analyst is needed in the definition of the resulting object maintenance strategy.
