ABSTRACT

The world is changing. Humanity faces increasing frequency of natural disasters and increasing economic and social problems and challenges. The building stock should be more adapted to the new situation and changing conditions for sustainable functioning in the future. It should be more resilient. A major part of present buildings makes use of concrete structures. Concrete is, due to its specific material properties, the most used material in the world after water. Due to optimization of production technology and design techniques, concrete is gradually becoming a building material appropriate and advantageous for resilient and sustainable structures. Thus the more sophisticated use of advanced concrete structures represents a significant potential for further improvement of sustainable and resilient built environment.
