ABSTRACT

In order to provide continuous and reliable fairway conditions on the river Danube a holistic waterway asset management system (WAMS) has been developed in Austria since 2012. This system is already capable of calculating fairway availability for 350 km including all fords based on past and actual water levels and riverbed surveys. In addition, systematic analysis and planning of dredging measures as most common treatment for fords in low water periods up to budgeting for any target condition have been implemented. In this paper we focus on concepts for further developments including an assessment of dredging and dumping impact, full sedimentation and erosion management as well as impact and condition assessment of river engineering measures. Furthermore, we will provide an approach to optimize the timing of all kinds of measures regarding fairway availability together with a short outlook how transport analysis will be included.
