The setting: Lyalikov’s factory outside of Moscow. Korolyov, a doctor from Moscow, arrives to visit Liza, daughter of the factory owner. She is twenty years old, sickly and frail (The doctors say it is nerves’), but he can find nothing wrong when he examines her.
