ABSTRACT

Moacyr Scliar is one of the best-known writers in Brazil. He is also a public health physician. His many books – novels, short stories, essays, non-fiction – are written with great imaginative power, and several of them blend Brazilian and Jewish themes. Among his best-known works are the collection of short stories O Carnaval dos Animais (The Carnival of the Animals) and the novel O Centauro no Jardin (The Centaur in the Garden) – both written in a style often called ‘magical realism’.
