ABSTRACT

This chapter highlights the knowledge, skills and behaviours of effective clinical leaders, and explains how to spot, nurture and develop leadership potential in teachers and their learners. Clinical engagement in leadership in healthcare is a key facet of professionalism. 'Talent management' in the healthcare service considers leadership as an integrated process rather than depending on individuals from a single profession, or being related to personality or personal traits. The responsibility for healthcare leadership rests with the most appropriate person at that particular time. Leadership development programmes often include simulation exercises. This provides a safe environment in which variables can be adjusted to test out actions and reactions in a team arena, with different individuals taking the position of leader. By engaging with the process of change in healthcare through leadership and speaking out about the shared values of healthcare workers, teachers can cultivate an environment in which 'creative professionalism', a new inclusive discourse, can flourish.
