ABSTRACT

Art may have a function in expressing emotion or in stimulating aesthetic pleasure. There can be a joy, fascination, excitement, aesthetic pleasure in looking at art. Learners are asked to go on their own to an art gallery or museum of their choice. They are asked to make notes on one exhibit that draws their attention and to acquire a postcard or catalogue photo of it if possible, to bring to the group. The learner not only needs biological knowledge about an illness and its effects, but also needs to comprehend the experience for the patient of that illness and their beliefs and expectations. The chapter provides some examples of the use of the art resource in teaching about eating disorders, women's health and smoking cessation. Smoking is something that doctors have to deal with. In general, they have to give information about the health risks and help people to give up smoking if they want to do so.
