ABSTRACT

Modern Human Resource Management (HRM) practice at a strategic level ensures that the people dimension is integral to organisational strategy. The chapter focuses on the environmental and managerial factors that create the circumstances in which people want to do great work, the crucial role of front line managers and the importance of team working. Managers and leaders within the National Health Service (NHS) are working within a more progressive HRM environment with the drive for modernisation through Agenda for Change and Improving Working Lives (IWL). IWL aimed to support organisational culture change and embed good HRM practice at the heart of service delivery. A major national study of team working in the NHS and the factors associated with it was done by the Healthcare Team Effectiveness Project. This is a national study of team working in primary, secondary and community mental healthcare and research on team working in breast cancer care.
