ABSTRACT

Nearly all hormonal and surgical treatment in a gender identity clinic will remove the potential for fertility. This must be made clear to patients, who may wish to consider gamete banking. The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority has not given specific consideration to the position of transsexuals or those living in an acquired gender role with regard to assisted conception treatment. The authority notes that there are, a number of complicated issues relating to the legal status of transsexuals and transgendered people with respect to children born as a result of assisted conception treatment. The fact that a person's gender has become the acquired gender under this Act does not affect the status of the person as the father or mother of a child. Parenthood is rendered a very complicated matter because patients who change their birth certificates after having had children by any means remain the childrens' parent in the sex they were before they changed their birth certificate.
