ABSTRACT

An ethnic group is characterized by a sense of identity and implies a common geographical origin, language, religion or distinctive traditions. The two ethnic minority groups which have been the subject of the most study in the country will be referred to as Asian and Afro-Caribbean. An inability to speak and understand English is a major barrier to communication among older Asians. Differences in patterns of disease between ethnic minority groups and the indigenous population are beginning to emerge. For instance, Asians and Afro-Caribbeans have a greater than expected prevalence of diabetes mellitus, while Asians suffer more coronary artery disease and Afro-Caribbeans more hypertension and stroke illness. Health authorities have been criticized for being slow to respond to health issues affecting ethnic minority groups. Both primary and secondary health care facilities remain inflexible resulting in unequal access and less favourable standards of care.
