ABSTRACT

This chapter seeks to hold a 'pit stop' for men at the Harley-Davidson showroom in Chapel Ash, offering health MOTs during an open weekend held once every three months. It explains at Lymm Truck Stop, near Manchester, in 2005 it became clear that many men do not have a clear idea what is meant by obesity. The chapter describes the benefits of taking men's health services into men's own environments. The aim of the surgery was to establish if men would attend a service if it was offered in their own environment. What was interesting was to hear how many of the obese men had not realised the impact that obesity had on their health. Many Health Action Zones and primary care trusts began taking the pub clinics concept forward as part of a strategy to improve men's health. Few healthcare professionals seem to recognise the importance of catering for the differences between men and women in providing services.
