ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses ways of working with men and boys to deliver effective sexual health promotion in primary care. Research has suggested that young boys/people are most anxious about confidentiality. The fear of parents or teachers finding out continues to deter young people from using services. The issue of where and how to target vulnerable groups is not as difficult as it sounds. Outreach work involves making contact with people on their own territory and this very often applies to vulnerable groups, who may not feel able to access mainstream services but are often those most in need. In sexual health promotion, condoms would seem to be the obvious choice to be given free. Sexual health promoters need to consider what needs to change to encourage men and boys to attend voluntarily and gain a positive experience. Negotiate with condom reps and local condom distribution schemes to get as many varieties as possible.
