ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on work with clients at the 'Action' stage, i.e. those individuals who have actively committed to a specific behaviour change. Clearly, however, there is much work to be done at the national and local level to move smokers forward to this stage. The broad aim of smoking cessation work with men is to help reduce the spiralling levels of heart disease, stroke, lung disease and various cancers – and as such is part of a wide spectrum of work dedicated to this goal. A lot of men are highly attracted to the idea of stopping smoking in work time. It is true to say that a lot of the traditional excuses for not quitting are themselves going up in smoke. In order for men to engage in health issues they often need to be on their own territory, where they are comfortable and feel unthreatened.
