ABSTRACT

Ethnic minority groups have been found to generally have poorer health, poorer access to health services and are less satisfied with health services than the majority white population. This chapter focuses on the nationally acclaimed Health of Men Barber Shop Project, which provides a good illustration of how to deliver a community based service targeted towards a particular ethnic group. Targeted interventions such as the Barber Shop Project aim to tackle barriers to accessing services by taking health services directly to the target community. The work developed gradually. What began as a monthly session developed into a fortnightly commitment and then became a regular 2–3 hour session. This was purely based on the needs of the men and the owner, who was happy for men to come into his shop to access our services without having a haircut.
