ABSTRACT

This chapter gives an overview of the Alcohol Harm Reduction Strategy for England. It focuses on what the Strategy suggests with regard to improving information flow, and the identification and treatment of alcohol misuse. Drinking is a choice, and for people to be informed about their drinking choices it is important that information is communicated clearly and, where necessary, designed for specific groups of people. The National Alcohol Strategy highlights the need for young people to receive 'adequate education on the issue'. Information is not only about the effects of alcohol, or the indicators that alcohol use has become problematic and/or that alcohol dependence has developed. It is also about ensuring people know where to get help. The new-patient health check is an opportunity for questions to be asked about alcohol use, what has been termed universal screening. Some surgeries may use a particular screening tool – for example, the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test.
