ABSTRACT

All the London medical schools offer posts with different balance between clinical and educational activity, different educational activities and different degrees of involvement in their practices. At the time of writing it is not possible to predict which of these posts will continue after the end of London Initiative Zone Educational Incentives (LIZEI) in 1998. The chapter concentrates on four different models, provided at Queen Mary and Westfield College (QMW), such as London Academic Training Scheme (LATS) Registrars, academic Fellows, academic associates, and academic trainees, and one at the University of Birmingham, such as academic general practice (GP) Registrar. Most participants have developed their research ideas separate from ongoing departmental research. This avoids junior researchers joining an existing project simply to follow through someone else's original idea without fully developing their own critical faculties. High-quality project supervision by the host department is the key to success of the posts.
